New to the Quran? Start here.

Welcome. You are not asked to believe anything here — only to look with us, ask questions, and test things for yourself.

  1. 1

    What is the Quran?

The Quran is the book Muslims accept as the word of God, revealed in Arabic to the Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century. It has 114 chapters (surahs) and 6,236 verses. Today nearly two billion people read it, memorise it and let it shape their lives.

  2. 2

    What do we do here?

We study relationships between the text's words, roots, arrangement and layers of meaning. A relationship is published only if it is verified by computation, measured against chance, and passes a committee of experts. We show the claims we reject, with our reasons.

    How to read it

Every publication separates 'verified by computation' from 'remains interpretation'. Click on numbers to reproduce them yourself in the Lab. The Arabic original of each verse is always shown with its source.

First step: al-Fatiha

The opening chapter of the Quran, recited by Muslims in every prayer. Hover over the words to see their roots.

Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.

  5. إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ﴿٥﴾

Guide us to the straight path -

  7. صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ ﴿٧﴾

The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.
